On the Museum Thursday of 17th September you can visit the Soldier’s Cottage, to hear about the societal impact of the allotment system of the Swedish military.
Soldier’s cottages were implemented in Ostrobothnia during the 18th century, after the Russian occupation of Finland, known as The Great Wrath. The allotment system had nearby farms join into a rote and together equip a soldier, who was given a cottage to live in during peacetime. Long before conscription, this system guaranteed a standing army that could be quickly mobilised in case of war.
We will have an open house at the Soldier’s Cottage from 13 o’clock until 16 o’clock. Follow the signs in the museum village. Dress according to the weather, for we will be outdoors.
